The "TaKaRa" in the company name TaKaRa Shuzo is a play on words, meaning both "treasure" and "from a rice paddy" in Japanese. For well more than a millennium, the Japanese have inhabited this fertile archipelago and regard Nature's bounty, cultivated in paddy and field, nursed by the sun and the rain, as precious treasure deserving reverence.
Having a name with such connotations, our company conducts its business in the consciousness that our natural endowment entails reciprocal obligations to Nature: we are mindful always of our company's impact on the environment.
In 1985, when our company celebrated the 60th anniversary of its founding, we defined as our corporate policy "To contribute to the creation of a vital society and a healthy lifestyle for its members through our fermentation technology, and, at the same time, to achieve harmony with nature."
The fermentation industry is the core of TaKaRa's business, and it mimics the course of nature in that it relies on the action of microorganisms to produce alcohol from grains and other farm produce as its raw materials. Naturally, we want to keep on running our business in environment-friendly ways, and this has been the cornerstone of TaKaRa's entrepreneurial creed and tradition.
Needless to say, no company that wants to continue in business can safely neglect environment issues. Making our products and processes more environment-friendly is therefore a corporate goal as important as the goals TaKaRa has always pursued: quality, safety, profitability. This includes softening the environmental impacts that inevitably accompany any business activity. It does not mean simply patching up the visible damage one has already done, but must include finding ways to make products that inflict the least possible damage on the environment from the beginning.
TaKaRa aims to become a Green company, and a profitable one, by building upon a foundation of across-the-board market competitiveness, taking into its sights as we enter the 21st century both the quality and the safety of its products, the profitability of its operations, and the environmental suitability of its production and sales methods.
