Overseas Activities

Sho-Chiku-Bai sake-barrel breaking ceremony at a charity event held at Hakone Garden

Takara Sake USA Inc., a Japanese company located in San Francisco, contributes not only to the events hosted by Japanese organizations, but also to local festivals and natural environment organizations.
In addition to sponsoring Japanese-affiliated events that convey Japanese culture to American citizens, an example of which is the Cherry Blossom Festival, the largest event in Japan Town, Takara supports most of the annual events organized by the Consulate General of Japan and the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Northern California. Nowadays, a Sho-Chiku-Bai sake-barrel breaking ceremony is an indispensable part of any Japanese-affiliated event. Every year Takara participates in an event at Hakone Garden, a Japanese garden, and donates all proceeds from the event to a fund to maintain the garden. At “Jazz on the 4th,” a festival held near the main office, Takara holds a paid sake tasting, and donates all the proceeds to the local organizer.

Funding Velotaxi

Takara Shuzo has co-sponsored the operation of Velotaxis, a bicycle taxi ever since the initial test run in 2002. Velotaxis started operating in Kyoto under the control of the Ecological-Cities Promoting Association/ NPO.
In 2006, Velotaxis carrying the TaKaRa logo operated in three cities, namely Kyoto, Tokyo and Nagoya.
At the Ecoproducts Exhibition held in December 2006, we exhibited a Velotaxi at our company booth and offered test rides, thus introducing the idea to environment-conscious companies and consumers.

Collaboration with NPOs

In its wish to become a company that is even more well-known by the general public, Takara Shuzo has been engaged in various programs in cooperation with nonprofit organizations (NPOs).

- Takara Rice and Sake School in collaboration with the NPO Mori no Gakko and the Chiba Prefecture Council for Nature Study Instructors.
- As a collaborative program with the Nippon Environment Club, Takara issued TaKaRa Recycle Road, a picture book on beverage container recycling. This book is distributed to elementary and junior high schools throughout Japan.
- Introducing efforts by the Ecological-Cities Promoting Association/NPO that operates Velotaxi and Shibafu (lawn) School Kyoto at Takara Shuzo’s company booth at the Ecoproducts Exhibition.
- In 2006, we asked the the Kyoto CSR Society, consisting of four members including a researcher, an office worker in charge of CSR, a member of NPO and a student, for third party opinions on this report.
