[Voice of Cooperating Organizations]
Our basic stance on NPO activities is to work on reasonable projects and continue lasting activities at the popular level. In our 12 years of activities, we have accumulated much know-how and actual achievements. Then a proposal was made to operate the Rice and Sake School in cooperation with Takara Shuzo.
We welcome the fact that Mori no Gakkos theme of improving our consciousness towards nature is also being promoted in companies. However, we wont say that any form of activity is acceptable. As in this program, it is important that the employees of the sponsoring company go out into the field and become actively involved in the programs. From the participants viewpoint, it is easy to recognize when the company simply sponsors a program and when it is actively involved in the program. I hope that programs with direct and active corporate involvement will increase.

Bekko Tombo hatching
|
The Oita Dragonfly Society is engaged mainly in preserving the Bekko Tombo (Libellula angelina Selys) designated under the Law for the Conservation of Endangered Species of Wild FaÇìuna and Flora. The society also surveys dragonfly populations, conducts environmental education mainly on dragonflies, and issues a newsletter. The population of the Bekko Tombo in Pond Misumi used to number around 1,000, but it is now threatened with extinction. We are engaged in feeding and breeding larvae of the Bekko Tombo to restore the population. This spring, 149 Bekko Tombo hatched from tanks installed in the pond. From the end of April to the beginning of May, we were able to observe the mating behavior and egg laying of the female dragonfly. This enabled us to take a great step forward in our breeding scheme. We deeply appreciate the support we have received and we will steadily continue our activities to contribute to biodiversity. |

The whole of our plant is controlled based on ISO 14001 targets.
At the Fushimi Plant where I work, we are working for the efficient use of resources and energy based on ISO 14001 targets. In particular, I am responsible for checking electricity and water usage and daily CO2, NOx and SOx emissions. I also manage the waste water treatment facilities. I also attend emergency response training sessions regularly and try to control environmental impact by paying attention to changes in numerical values. In addition to our efforts on the work front, we also promote energy conservation and recycling by saving electricity and water in rest rooms, turning off lights during lunch break, and separating out trash. |

Environmentally-friendly driving helped me improve gas mileage significantly.
We enjoy implementing eco-drive activities as a group effort. My group has set the goal of 4Ss (speed, signals, seatbelt, sake) driving and scores each members driving performance on a scale of five, to promote awareness among members. The results of eco-navigation system-assisted driving and environmentally-friendly inspections are made public on a bulletin board to promote friendly competition. I successfully improved my gas mileage by 30% with the aid of the eco-navigation system. |
