"Green-Ink" Corporate Report 2005

For the Earth with "iki-iki" (happiness and health)

We Have Reduced Paper Usage Significantly and Expanded Green Purchasing.

The environmental impact of the administrative and marketing divisions is less than those of the production plants. However, this is an area where further efforts to reduce the impact are required. Takara Shuzo obtained ISO 14001 certification by fiscal 2002 at its 10 branches and Main Office and has promoted environmental activities in its offices.

Reductions in the Use of Electricity and Copier Paper and Garbage

Takara Shuzo has set reductions in the use of electricity and copier paper and the reduction and recycling of office waste as its ISO 14001 targets for activities in the office. For both cost reductions and environmental considerations, our energy conservation efforts in the office consist of making sure lights are turned off after working hours and during the lunch break and consolidating office space.

As a result, electricity usage in offices in fiscal 2004 was reduced by 27% from fiscal 2000. We have incorporated electricity usage in our Green-Ink Accounting categories to achieve a 3% reduction over the fiscal 2004 level by fiscal 2007.

Garbage from offices is properly processed in accordance with the method of separating waste materials set by each municipality.

Activities to reduce the use of copier paper at offices started in all branches in 1998 and have been implemented from the viewpoint of a more efficient business process, cost reductions and environmental considerations. In particular, we use two-sided copying and use another side of used paper, as well as making active use of copying machines such as digital multi-functional devices with scanners and facsimile which doesn’t need papers. We also hold in-house conferences using PCs to reduce the amount of reference paper material distributed. These efforts resulted in a reduction in paper usage in fiscal 2004 by 25% over fiscal 2000.

Electricity Usage in Office Sheets of Copier Paper Used in Offices

The figures up to fiscal 2003 are only for Takara Shuzo. As the base values for the third Green-Ink Accounting period, the data used includes those for Takara Network System Co., and Total Management Business Co., Ltd. located in the same building as the Main Office. (Electricity: 2,218,000 kWh: Copier paper: 9,331,000 sheets)

Green Purchasing for Office Supplies, Business Vehicles and Printing

“Green purchasing in the office” was incorporated as an indicator for the Second Green-Ink Accounting Period (2001 - 2003) to promote green purchasing. By using a company-wide common purchasing system, educating purchasing personnel to select products bearing an environmentally-friendly mark and educating employees through the company DB, the company-wide green product purchasing ratio in fiscal 2004 was 86%, surpassing the goal of 72%.

For the third period (2005 - 2007), we set ourselves the goal of increasing the ratio of low-emission vehicles among our business vehicles and incorporated this goal as one of our Green-Ink Accounting indicators. The rate of introduction of low-emission vehicles in fiscal 2004 was 44% and we are expecting to achieve 80% by fiscal 2007. When our sales staffs visit a customer who is located far from a branch, they are required to use public transport to the nearest station. We also try to drive safely and in an environmentally-friendly manner.

Through Takara Network System Co., Ltd., a Takara Group company, we preferentially purchase environmentally-friendly printer toner. For printed matter published by Takara, including products catalogs and annual reports, we have accepted a proposal from Taihei Printing Co., Ltd. to use recycled paper and environmentally-friendly printing methods, and thus we are also promoting green purchasing in printing.
