Efficient use of resources and energy based on priority management
|
| The manufacture of products uses resources and energy obtained from the Earth. Takara Shuzo includes the environmental impact resulting from production in its Green -Ink Accounting categories. We strive to use energy efficiently and to reduce waste. |

Takara Shuzo is making various efforts to reduce emissions of CO2, a greenhouse gas, during production. At our plants, steam generated from boilers is used in the distilling process and for heating washing water and sterilization, as a heat source to keep warm and for steaming rice used in products. In the steam turbine power generation system at the Matsudo Plant (Chiba), turbine blades have been installed in the production (distillation) process for raw alcohol instead of a pressure reducer. The heat energy that has been wasted up to then is converted to rotational energy and fed to electric generators to produce electric energy for use in the plant. At the Fushimi Plant (Kyoto), a natural gas supply stand was installed. Out of 50 forklifts, 28 have been converted to use natural gas, and 18 have been converted to electrical power. In addition, one small freight car, one truck and two passenger cars now run on natural gas.
Total energy usage in fiscal 2004 increased 10% from fiscal 2000. It increased 4.3% from fiscal 2000 per kiloliter of production. The increase is attributable to the increased percentage of raw alcohol distilled, a process that consumes a lot of energy. Concurrently with the increase in energy usage, total CO2 emissions in fiscal 2004 increased 9.3%, which is 3.4% by volume per kiloliter of production.

Waste water treatment facilities
|
We use a massive amount of water in production because of the type of products we manufacture. To reduce water usage as much as possible, we reuse water used for the final washing of containers as cooling water for the products after thermal sterilization. As with our efforts to reuse pure water for processes requiring lower standards of purity, we are reviewing the purity levels of water appropriate to each process. At the same time, we implement full water saving measures in all our plants. As a result, total water usage fell from fiscal 2000 by 27%, which is 31% by volume per kiloliter of production. Waster water discharged from our plants also decreased. Waste water from each production process goes through biological treatment in active sludge tanks in our waste water treatment facilities before it is discharged into the environment. We regularly conduct water quality inspections for water pollutants.
The Shimabara plant (Nagasaki) supplies chilled hot waste water generated in the alcohol distillation process to Shimabaras municipal heated swimming pool and other local facilities.
