Green space on the premises of our plant
|
Takara Shuzo is also promoting effective utilization of by-products and waste generated from plants.
By-products such as sake and mirin lees that can be used as food products are commercialized and sold to food processing companies by Takara Bussan, a Takara Shuzo Group company. For the general household market, in 2003 Takara Shuzo launched Sho-Chiku-Bai Sakagura Gozen Sakekasu Nabe Tsuyu that uses sake lees from sake Sho-Chiku-Bai. We also recycle waste material: excess sludge produced from our waste water treatment facilities is dried and turned into fertilizer for sale. In addition, kitchen refuse from company cafeterias is composted and used on green spaces within the premises of our plants.
In fiscal 2004, our plants generated 4,338 tons of waste (excluding by-products), representing a decrease of 1,130 tons from fiscal 2000. However, the recycling rate remained at 97.0% and failed to achieve the target of 99.5%. This is due to the increased production of authentic shochu. To address this, we will improve feed manufacturing plants and waste liquid treatment facilities.
