For the Earth with “iki-iki”(happiness and health) Products

Reducing the Impact on the Environment Mainly through Efforts Related to Containers and Packaging, Including Resource-saving and Recycling

Takara Shuzo has implemented the 4Rs, adding “Refuse” to the traditional 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), following a defined order of priority. We also hold regular meetings of the Environmentally-friendly Product Development Task Force, which consists of the product development, purchasing and environment divisions to monitor progress in the development of environmentally-friendly products and to exchange relevant information.

Guidelines for Developing Environmentally-friendly Products

To implement 4R activities rigorously, we have stipulated Guidelines for Developing Environmentally-friendly Products to ensure that the environment is considered at the product design stage.

[Overview of the Guidelines]

Basic concept of environmentally-friendly products

Alcohol beverages and food products result in empty containers and waste packaging after consumption. The environmental problems caused by containers and packaging are our top priority. We must realize that environmental problems left after consumption fall within the scope of our responsibility. Recognizing that environmental considerations are necessary at the product design stage constitutes one of the most important and most efficient environmental measures in encouraging the development of environmentally-friendly products.

By developing environmentally-friendly products, we will push ahead with our environmental marketing to bring enhanced product value to consumers, to reduce the social cost and to reinforce product competitiveness.

Things to be considered at the product design stage
(1) To recognize the priority of the 4Rs in product development
(2) To reduce the weight of materials as much as possible with due consideration given to product safety
(3) To develop returnable containers
(4) To make improvements in container design that will contribute to more efficient recycling
(5) To use as much recycled material as possible
(6) To use no vinyl chloride materials
(7) To reduce the elution of endocrine disruptors
(8) To avoid the use of compound materials
(9) To promote consumer-friendly recycling labels
(10) To be the first company in the industry to develop and apply new technologies and ideas that contribute to addressing environmental problems

Concept of the 4Rs

Green Procurement 4Rs Guidelines

We have laid down Green Procurement 4Rs Guidelines to promote the 4Rs (refuse, reduce, reuse and recycle) for containers and packaging purchased by the Purchasing Division.

[Overview of the Guidelines]

Concept of the 4Rs
The containers and packaging purchased by Takara must be at a high level of quality and made with environmentally-friendly materials and design. We will base our activities in this area on the three principles: specifying banned substances, environmental considerations at the design level and understanding partner companies in order to encourage use of the 4Rs when purchasing containers and packaging.

Purchasing considerations
Containers and packaging must be purchased on the criterion that such containers and packaging comply with related environmental laws and regulations and contain no banned substances. In addition to the required quality, functionality and economic rationality, we should wherever possible purchase containers and packaging that satisfy the following requirements to reduce the burden on the environment.
(1) Should be designed to reduce waste weight
(2) Smallest volume on disposal
(3) Should be made of a single material
(4) In cases where containers and packaging are made of multiple materials, should be easy to sort on disposal
(5) Can be reused or very easy to reuse
(6) Should impose a low burden on the environment during manufacture
(7) Should use recycled materials or materials that use a high percentage of recycled products
(8) Should have less burden on the environment in terms of the packaging specified for delivery

Partner companies should be selected on the basis of quality, price, delivery time, service, and technology development capabilities. While ensuring equal trading opportunities, we will work preferentially with companies who have obtained ISO 14001 certification, or companies who are highly motivated to implement environmental preservation activities, even without certification.
