| How Is the ECO value calculated and how are weights assigned? |
The 11 categories covered in the third Green-Ink Accounting period cannot simply be added together, because they are expressed in different units. Therefore, the integrated indicator, ECO, is calculated by taking a weighted average (Assigned weight/3 = Weighted value) of the percentage improvement in each category. Improvements are represents by a positive ECO value and degradations by a negative ECO value.
To obtain “weighted values,” five researchers, Takara Shuzo’s five environmental staff and an Internet poll taken of 137 people are used to assign the weights (1 to 5), reflecting the importance of Takara Shuzo’s involvement in reducing the environmental impact in each category. The weights assigned by the three parties are averaged and rounded to obtain an integer weighted value.

| To make the Green-Ink Accounting an indicator of environmental management, fiscal 2004 has been set as the base year, in line with the Takara Shuzo Group’s Mid-Term Management Plan for the period from fiscal 2005 to fiscal 2007. Therefore, the Green-Ink Accounting indicator will be 0 (zero) ECO in fiscal 2004. We are endeavoring to reach a goal of +4 ECO by fiscal 2007. |
