Product Planning
Working to control environmental impacts at the source

To reduce the environmental impact generated by all processes, from raw material procurement to production, distribution, sales, and post-consumption, it is vitally important to consider the environment during a product's planning stages. Takara Shuzo not only has established "Guidelines for Development of Environmentally Considerate Products" but has also included development of environmentally considerate products in our ISO14001 goals.

Beyond the 3 R's: practicing the 4 R's
We recognize that one of the larger social problems caused by the alcohol and beverage industry is the environmental impact of containers and packages discarded after use.
Takara Shuzo has implemented the 4 R's, which adds Refuse to the traditional 3 R's (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle).

1. Refuse (avoid waste)
2. Reduce (reduce waste)
3. Reuse (use products again)
4. Recycle (make new resources)

Developing bulk sales of shochu (avoiding waste generation: "refuse")
In the modern age, we use energy and resources to reduce effort and work, which is generally called efficiency. Directly opposing this approach, bulk sales are a retail method that increases effort and work to reduce resource and energy consumption. We deliver 1-kiloliter or 200-liter tanks of shochu to retail stores; customers bring their own bottles and fill these with only as much product as required. Although this system takes a little more effort, we believe that it is a superb sales system for reducing waste and conserving resources. From its start in 1998 to March 2004, our bulk sales program has saved about 2.22 million 2.7-liter PETE bottles and 370 thousand cardboard boxes.

Maintaining the returnable bottle system
We believe that returnable bottles are an effective way to reduce resource consumption and waste.

But changes in lifestyles and distribution systems have resulted in the continual reduction of the use of returnable bottles, including Issho bottles . The survival of the returnable bottle system is doubtful. But in 1994, Takara began to use returnable 720-ml bottles for its flagship products, Takara Shochu Jun and Takara Shochu Jun Legend. Takara also works to maintain the returnable bottle system by participating in the establishment of P-Kan Rental Co. and bottle washing companies.

From the beginning of these efforts in 1994 to March 2004, 66.25 million bottles (38,425 tons) were collected and reused.
